Shenandoah Candy
Company initially began operations in 1927 in Winchester, Virginia as Ridgewood
Orchards Candy Co. About 1930, the name was changed to Shenandoah Candy
Company. When this new candy was introduced to the people of the Shenandoah
Valley, they were overwhelmed with the great taste. Sales immediately took off. Demand
increased to the point that it was necessary to hire more employees. In 1930 alone, 87,792
lbs. were made and sold. With this new name, and the demand greater than ever for the new
confection, it was necessary to make plans for expansion.
Eventually a new plant was
built along U.S. Route #50, within the city limits of Winchester. The Company continued
progression by putting salesmen on the road. Shenandoah Apple Candy was
now being sold and delivered throughout the eastern United States. The Company continued
operations at this location until the owners retired or died. It was sold in 1997 to
Millcroft Farms Company, Inc a family owned corporation.
